While the covers helped gain the band some attention, they've always been in service of pointing people towards their original music... an at times jaw dropping mix of time signatures, off beats, jarring harmonies, and ultimately extremely satisfying collection of ska punk anthems. I remember first listening to their 2018 record \"Phantom Arrival\" while I was on a transbay bus heading into San Francisco... at one point I let out an audible \"JEES\" at a particularly potent riff, which made more than a few of the tech rank and file lift their heads from their phones... no small feat. I had high hopes when I heard a rumor that the followup record had been completed towards the end of 2021. Within a few minutes of listening to LAVOS it was clear that no matter how high my hopes were set, I had somehow vastly underestimated it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt's rare to find a record that not only tells a story through it's lyrics, but through a distinctive musical journey... The Holophonics don't just throw the genre kitchen sink at LAVOS because they can, but because it often times throughout the album serves a specific purpose. There are speedy skate punk elements interspersed with rapid time changes to punctuate and heighten anxiety... there are meaty easycore riffs to bring some joy and catharsis... there are intricate traditional ska sections that evolve into a showcase of horn-laden euphoria... the record swells, heightens, exhales, and truly feels like a living entity. The journey LAVOS takes is a deeply personal one for singer Eric Daino, and you feel as though you're right beside him as he grapples with trauma, anxiety, and expectation. And while you acutely feel the struggle, you equally feel and hear the joy as he begins to heal along the way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis is a record I've returned to a lot since first hearing it late last year... I feel like after every listen there's a new phrase or section running through my head for days. GEBO GOMI has been a collaboration in the works for a very long time, pairing two of the absolute best bands playing heavy ska punk in the entire world, and I could not be more excited to finally help bring it to life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTo say that The Suicide Machines have been an influential and important band to me would be like saying “water and oxygen are kind of OK I guess”. I can vividly recall sitting my lazy 14 year old ass in front of a TV in my basement on a blazing hot summer afternoon, N64 controller in hand, desperately trying to pull off 900s and grind combos for hours on end, only pausing briefly to hit “skip track” and keep one particular song in constant rotation. That song made me want to do something better than sit in front of my tv. It made me want to play music with my friends. It made me want to skateboard. It made me want to go to ska punk shows. It made me want to run through a fucking wall. It turned me into a lifelong TSM fan who would wind up devouring their entire catalogue, and trying my best to emulate their angst, energy, and chaotic energy in my own music, for frankly, the rest of my life. It would have been easy for The Suicide Machines to rest on their laurels, ride the wave for a while, and cash in and check out like so many of their peers at the time… but they are one of those rare bands who have never forgotten where they come from, why they do it, and for who. If you heard “Revolution Spring” in 2020 you know the band not only never lost a step, but probably gained a few. GEBO GOMI is the perfect extension of that… proving that the band had their energy and faith renewed, and is now coming full circle to hit their writing and performing stride all over again. “Awake” is maybe the catchiest TSM track ever, that even the members joke would probably have been a better choice for the Tony Hawk soundtrack if it was written in 1996… but tracks like “Accelerate The Decline” and “Slipping Into Darkness” show that band at it’s heaviest and angriest, pulling no punches and setting their targets as fiercely as ever. I don’t think this band has ever sounded better or more intentional, and if I wasn’t clear… that’s from someone who’s been KINDA into them for a long time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhile The Suicide Machines are probably the band that jumped out on you on this split, it would be foolish to ignore the power and history of Coquettish. Legendary in their own right as one of Japan’s heaviest, fastest, most energetic punk ska bands (“PUNK SKA AS FUCK” as they like to say), it’s easy to see why Coquettish and TSM became lifelong friends on tour together in 2018. Both bands have an undeniable ferocity in their approach to ska, with over-powering relentless rhythms that effortlessly mix in danceable ska in a way that almost sneaks up on you. From my own experience getting to briefly tour Japan in 2019, I was blown away by a common thread I found amongst the heaviest punk ska bands that is extremely apparent in Coquettish… a manic energy that constantly feels like it’s teetering on the brink of chaos, but is purely by design. Because of the technical prowess of the band, Coquettish is able to keep their performance extremely tight and locked in despite often feeling like it’s going to go careening off the rails at any moment. Honestly, it’s the best type of ska punk there is, and it’s on full display on Side B of GEBO GOMI. Songs like “I Feel” force you to move your feet and bang your head, even if it feels just slightly beyond the range of how fast you think you’re able to dance, while tracks like “Burn” are just straight up moshable party tracks that will make you yearn for a cramped smoke filled club somewhere east of Lake Biwa. While I was a fan before this split, GEBO GOMI has turned me into a Coquettish lifer… seeing them destroy a club in Tokyo one day has crept towards the top of my ska punk bucket list.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe significance of this collaboration will probably (hopefully) be discussed by the bands and anyone talking about the album, but I believe that it hinges one important idea; that music and friendship cross all borders and boundaries. This is for sure a hallmark record for ska punk partnerships with some amazing songs, but it’s really about two bands who could not have been born and raised further apart or in more different circumstances finding commonality through music, and sharing a bond that they’ll have forever. The songs on this split complement each other so well, you might think Coquettish grew up just down route 96 in Lansing or something. Music is the great equalizer, and this is such a great example of friends and peers coming together to make something special. One of the first combinations I thought of was Folly, a band who pushed skacore to it’s absolute limit during their short-lived run through the early 2000s, and their clear modern day counterparts The Best of The Worst. “Wouldn’t that be nuts” was the prevailing thought about how possible this would be. But… it’s real, it’s here, and to me personally at least, it’s a lot bit mind blowing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI’ve talked a lot about the New Jersey scene that I grew up in… a true melting pot of genre, where (as a ska band at least) you never knew what type of bill you were going to be on any given night at any given vfw hall or church basement. Ska bands played with metal bands, hardcore bands, punk bands… and as far as I was concerned, if you wanted to be accepted in any of these scenes you need to try and mesh these styles together. One band stood above all others when it came to defining this concept… Folly. They are the only band I saw play at Hellfest one week(a legendary hardcore fest where, yes, you were going to get karate kicked), and then open for Mustard Plug the next. They were so intensely heavy that nobody could doubt their commitment to hardcore and metalcore; intricate dissonant riffs, songs that could shift between keys and tempos and time signatures without missing a beat, and breakdowns that would make any hardcore kid step back and say “damn” before windmilling into the pit. But then… just as they’d get the crowd whipped into a frenzy, they would seamlessly break into ska parts. In a time where ska was literally a dirty word that could get you shunned from a scene, this band was changing the minds of thousands of heavy music fans and making them realize that their biases were simply ill-informed. Folly has always been the great equalizer to me… the perfect response to my hardcore loving ska hating friends. I can not tell you how many close personal friends I have that went from “hating ska”, to discovering Folly, to LOVING and even MAKING SKA. Not only did they turn fans, but they became an enormous influence on an entire generation of musicians who loved both heavy music and ska… showing them what was possible in the extremes, and encouraging them to not hold back or be defined by ‘scene rules’. The one band that truly took up Folly’s mantle after they disbanded in 2008, and continue to carry on their ethos and style…. was The Best of the Worst.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe Best of the Worst are not shy about who their biggest influences are. For years they gave away a big red bumper sticker that just said “FOLLY \u0026gt; THE BEST OF THE WORST”. The first time I was given “Perspectives” I almost jumped out of my chair. “FINALLY” I thought, “SOMEONE IS TRYING TO MAKE SKACORE LIKE FOLLY…. AND DOING A GOOD JOB!!!” While their sound is truly an amalgamation of the entire NJ music scene around the mid 2000s (ska, punk, emo), it was impossible to ignore the Folly influence while hearing another band successfully blend ska and metalcore. I was in heaven. I’ve mentioned before that The Best of The Worst is one of my favorite bands of all time, and one of the reasons why is because they filled a void and picked up the mantle for one of my OTHER favorite bands of all time… Folly. I’m beyond stoked to say that the void is gone. For the first time in 14 years, there is new Folly music. And it seems only appropriate to me that it comes paired with new music by The Best of the Worst.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Walter White Whale” sounds exactly like what I would want new Folly to sound like. Note 1 takes your breath away as the band kicks in with no brakes. You’re instantly pulverized with tritones in asymmetric time, while Jon Tumillo’s shriek feels like it could wake you from a coma…. to me it signals “Folly is back” in the most Folly way possible. From there it’s a signature aural hedge maze diving between riffs, two-steps, and a signature mis-direction into the realm of ska. Also in typical Folly fashion, the lyrics play a major role in the song’s charm; while the uninitiated might hear screams of anger, a deeper listen reveals wordplay, metaphor, an affinity for pop-culture references, and a signature tongue and cheek sense of humor that seems to burn even brighter against such an intense musical backdrop. If this is your introduction to Folly, I think it’s a great taste of what this band has accomplished musically over the past 20+ years, and a sign of confidence that they still have the ability to surprise and please new and old fans alike.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Gatekeeper” is a new song by The Best of the Worst, and I feel like any time I can say that it doesn’t require much explanation because you KNOW how I feel about it. It rips. I remember when we first started talking abut this Wavebreaker tbotw expressed that they were stressed about making sure their track was good enough to be alongside a Folly track. Here’s the verdict: yes, it’s good enough and then some. A perfect extension of the band’s sound since “Better Medicine”, this new track blends the intensity of speedy hardcore riffs with some particularly tasty hornlines, danceable ska sections, and one hell of a breakdown at the end that is literally only rivaled by 1. The breakdown at the end of the Folly track and 2. Previous TBOTW breakdowns. As usual it’s also always great to hear a track where Jay and Joe trade vocal sections, as each voice gives a completely new vibe and meaning to each particular section of the song… all topped off by Liz’s harmonies and interjections that lend an even more complex vocal tapestry. This song makes me want to sing along and run through a wall, ie: a TBOTW classic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBoth of these bands are so important to me and have such a huge imprint on who I am as a person and as a ska fan. I literally did not think this Wavebreaker would be possible. It makes me feel like nothing is off limits, and that it is kind of an insane thought. I’m so very lucky to have this, and to be able to share it with you. If everyone starts hating ska again and BTR folds in the next few years, at least I’ll be able to say “yeah that sucks, but… remember that folly\/tbotw wavebreaker? From my first few local shows one thing became very clear; genre boundaries didn't mean shit. You could play ska, but could also throw in some speedy skate punk or saccharine emo. You could play metalcore, but could also have a ripping horn section. Bands like Catch 22 made ska kids realize that they also loved and needed the raw energy of hardcore. Bands like Folly made hardcore kids realize ska could be fun as hell and somehow make the hardcore parts seem EVEN HEAVIER. As a young musician in the scene, it seemed imperative to combine styles, smear your heart on your sleeve, embrace the music you love without fear of reproach, and to keep pushing the limits of genre. I don't think any band more fully embodies this idea than The Best of the Worst.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI first “met” the band in a New Brunswick basement (as one does) for a show they helped book for Kill Lincoln. Listening to them completely sonically destroy that basement was like looking into the past and future at the same time; here was a sound that I grew up trying to embrace and personify, and here was a band basically perfecting it. I also came to realize that many of us had actually met years prior… we had all come up together playing the same VFW's, basements, and shitty battle of the bands. As 14 year olds, we probably hated each other. But as a 20-something I felt an instant mutual understanding with them of what ska, punk, and DIY could and SHOULD be all about... and that formed into one of my most cherished musical friendships. The Best of the Worst have been making their own brand of ska-core for almost 15 years purely because they love doing it, and you can feel the love and sum of that experience in every moment of Better Medicine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt would be easy to label this album a “ska-core masterpiece” and not have to write the rest of this paragraph... but it’s so much more than that, and deserves consideration from anyone with even a fleeting interest in progressive music. It effortlessly swings between blast beat grinds and one-drop reggae, fast speedy ska punk and time-signature bending breakdowns, forgetting what it’s supposed to be and not giving a shit because it’s a runaway train barreling through your eardrums. Joe, Cheech, Kozak, and Jay combine to make one of the tightest rhythm sections in any ONE of these genres, and throughout the record do backflips and cartwheels from section to section that never feel forced but are consistently and delightfully surprising. If one section doesn’t resonate, give it a second and you’ll probably have a completely new listening experience to take in. Where in some ska-core the horns can feel like a novelty, Liz and Stiffy combine to make a melodic counterpoint to even the heaviest and most complex parts of the record… they blend together and match the rhythm’s power blow for blow. On top of all that, the lyrics and vocals on this album are an absolute emotional sledgehammer. There’s a weight to every word belted, screamed, or crooned by vocalists Jay, Liz, and Joe… a feeling that runs through the entire record only made possible during such insane and difficult times. It’s like you’re getting to the top of the hill that is your quarter-life crisis, looking down, and realizing that “real life” has just begun and nobody is coming to save you…. and oh by the way, the planet is on fire. We might be inheriting a broken world, but TBOTW won’t take it laying down. “Jaded views and a shit attitude are all you’ve got left. But, the resulting meal doesn’t elicit the Pavlovian response of “80’s!” that accompanied its predecessor. More Organ. Less Synth. More Crunch. Less Delay. Plenty of Crooning…and…guitar solos, so many guitar solos.   \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt’s a political record, but, not a banal call to unity or an outlay of electoral strategy.  Lead single, “That’s Not A House”, journeys deep into the Boston suburbs to discover that the most affluent among us are doing absolutely fine (and doing their best to keep hidden). “New American Hotel” will be familiar to anybody who has had to travel in these days of private equity and private security.
